On the Air, November 19

Here is the podcast copy of one of our best shows of the year so far. We had a smaller crew than usual since any of our folks who were involved with Theatre were working on Grease, which is being performed this week. And don't forget that it's Fall Family Weekend, so come out and watch the Corps parade on Saturday morning, then stay for the performance! The panel for this show was Jon Pedersen, John Camarella and Micah Peregrino, and we covered current evenrs from the popular to the obscure (BatBoy?).

WFTR October 8

Definitely getting into the swing of things with our radio show. We started out with a discussion of means and ends, based on a novel currently being discussed in AP English, and it slid nicely into the government shutdown and Obamacare. Our guests were John Camarella, Ben Schoonover, John Pederson, Meddi Oram, team captain Micah Peregrino and coach James Taafel. Here's the podcast:

We're Back!

The R-MA Speech and Debate Team is firing up for another year! Team Captain Micah Peregrino is back after going to Nationals last year (as did Jackson McGraw, who graduated), and we have a team made up of familiar stalwarts and some exciting newbies. One change from last year is that our Radio Forum programs on WFTR-AM will be on every other Tuesday night at 6 pm, instead of Monday nights. WFTR has gone to a Sports Talk format (and we're glad to see it's working out very well for them), so Monday nights are of course devoted to football. They wanted us back, bless their hearts...I guess the fact that we have been doing this for over 13 years and the FCC hasn't pulled their license yet was encouraging. So tune in every other Tuesday at 6pm to hear a bunch of the sharpest kids around discuss issues of the day. I'm delighted to be back to host the show again, even though it means that I'll be driving down from New York to do it; it's just too much fun to miss.

Our first show was going to be last Tuesday, September 10, but we got bounced to Wednesday the 11th thanks to a late Nationals game. The next show will be Tuesday the 24th. The podcast recordings of the show will be posted here as soon as our faithful friend Lonnie at WFTR uploads them

Our kickoff show (watch for more sports analogies) was a dandy, with Coach James Taafel and Captain Micah umpiring the conversation, as Markeesha Gibson, Meddi Oram, Ben Schoonover and Taylor Dickson stepping up to the plate on topics as diverse as Syria, government surveillance, Vladimir Putin, and cafeteria food. WFTR-AM Radio Forum, Feb. 18

Back on the air after missing the last show due to weather, we had quite a studio-full this time. Anchoring things were our co-captains Jackson McGraw and Micah Peregrino, assisted by stalwarts Jon Pedersen and Debbie Kim, and newbies Paige Hollis and Ryan Owesne. Many topics were covered, starting with the current debate resolution which involves whether or not the rise of China as a superpower is a good thing for the United States.

On the Air on Guns

Our Radio Forum this week focused on gun control, the President's initiative, the gun laws passed in New York, and other aspects of societal violence. Debbie Kim and Micah Peregrino did stalwart duty, and we welcomed new team member Torian Gadson.

January WFTR Show: a lively debate!

We decided to focus on this month's debate resolution, which relates to campaign financing and the Citizens United decision by the Supreme Court. Micah Peregrino and Debbie Kim took the Pro side, and Jackson McGraw and Jon Pedersen were on Con. Thanks to the fact that they've been preparing for this Saturday's WACFL tournament, they were ready for a rousing session. You'll enjoy it, I did.
